The Tamil Nadu government has opposed the centre's National Council for Higher Education and Research (NCHER) plan as the government holds that it is an infringement on the rights of the state government. The proposed NCHER is also opposed by Dravidar Kazhagam and Pattali Makkal Katchi. The state higher education minister K Ponmudy said that the uniform education system would be a difficult one to be implemented in a country that has diverse cultures and languages. The minister also said that the state's decision went against the concept of 'unity in diversity'. The minister also demanded that education should be moved from the concurrent list to the state's list. The minister alleged that investments in education turned out to be a commercial minded one after it was moved to the concurrent list.
