Land distribution as effective as in West Bengal - Karunanidhi  [Wednesday, November 11, 2009]
   
 

                               Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said that the track record maintained by the state in the land reforms programmes were as good as that of West Bengal. He was amaking a comparative analysis of the programme implementation in both the states. He said that  77,117 acres and 83,554 acres were distributed free in Tamil Nadu in 2006-2007 and 2007-2008, the corresponding figures for West Bengal were 18,340 acres and 8,498 acres.He was responding to an observation made by CPI State Secretary N Varadarajan that the land reforms in West Bengal was approved by the Mandal Commission. He also pointed out that it was the DMK government that introduced the Tamil Nadu Land Reforms Act 1970 and that under the act the ceilings of the land was reduced to 15 standard acres from the earlier 30 acres.
