BSNL Chennai Telephones are planning to roll out  the 3G telephony and Chennai might turn out to be the first metro in south India to get the facility. The projected speeds are 30 times faster than the 2G technology. The logistics for setting up the facility calls for 1000 base transciever station towers. The new technology will be put into use along with the attempt to revive the 2G network by commissioning another 2 lakh lines.
