WRD proposes construction of check dams to augment water supply [Tuesday, February 9, 2010]
The Water Resource Department (WRD) officials proposed on monday that the check dams across Araniar and Kosasthalaiyar rivers in Tiruvallur district would help in augmenting the water supply to chennai. The WRD will be using Rs 48 crore out of the total Rs 550 crore allocated for artifical recharge in rivers and streams towards construction of check dams. The check dam locations were determined using the remote sensing technique. The officials of the WRD said that the check dams would facilitate increase in water table in six well fields that are used for city water supply. The check dams will come up in Kalpattu, Sengathakulam and Panapakkam, all near Uthukkotai. The work on the check dams are due to begin in April.
