Bhogi smog disrupts air traffic in Chennai  [Wednesday, January 13, 2010]

The flights from Chennai was disrupted on wednesday due to the smog that was caused as a part of the 'Bhogi' festival in the state. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) said that around 28 flights were disrupted due to the burning of waste and similar material as a part of Bhogi. The pollution levels were as much as what was in last year despite the continued efforts of the Chennai Metropolitant Development Authority and the Pollution Control Borads efforts to prevent it. Both the bodies organized numerous awareness programmes to minimize the pollution levels, but the weather conditions as on wednesday proved it to be futile. “There was not much of smog in the last couple of years so we were not forced to divert the aircraft to other airports. But this year once again the burning of waste increased resulting in poor visibility,"said an officer from AAI.
