Coovum to be restored in ten years  [Tuesday, December 8, 2009]

The Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin said on tuesday that Coovum river will be restored to its original position in another 10 years. He added that the restoration of the river was the dream project of his father, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and that the task was on not just to beautify the river and its premises but also to revive it to its past glory. The river which is estimated to be 72 km long was once a good water source to Chennai. Later the river water was degraded by the release of effluent wastes, especially from the tanneries and other industries. The first step of the restoration is estimated to cost sround Rs 1200 crore and would involve the cleaning up of the adjoining lakes. The state government has deputed the Chennai River Authority headed by Stalin to launch the cleaning project.
