TN government makes registration of marriage compulsory  [Monday, November 30, 2009]

The Tamil Nadu government on monday made the registration of marriages compulsory and warned that strict action would be taken if the registration was not effected within a stipulated period after the marriage. The notice was produced by the Registration Department under the Tamil Nadu Marriages Registration Rules 2009. The press release also added that there should be a registration of the marriage even if it was registered under the governing acts of the various religions. The release added that the couples are expected to file a memorandum along with forms, signatures of the witnesses, and the priests and proof of age for registering the marriage. “All marriages, irrespective of religion or caste, if not registered within the prescribed time or any person who makes any statement which is false in material or particulars or contravenes any provisions of this Act, on conviction, will be punished,” , said the release.
