A brief history of Polio Plus:
Since Polio Plus began in 1985, when Rotary launched its Polio Plus program, individual Rotary members have collectively raised US$ 600 million and contributed countless volunteer hours to help immunize more than two billion children in 122 countries.
- Rotary’s financial contributions to the global polio eradication effort will reach nearly US$650 million by the time the world is certified polio-free.
- Rotary’s leadership, beginning in 1985, inspired the World Health Assembly to pass a resolution to eradicate polio, which paved the way for the formation of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988.
- Thousands of Rotarians around the world have volunteered during National Immunization Days to immunize children.
- To date the polio plus program has contributed US$ 600 million to the protection of more than two billion children in 122 countries. These funds are providing much needed polio vaccine, operational costs, such as transportation, vaccine delivery, social mobilization, and training of health workers, and support surveillance activities.
In the present context, it is very important to begin a mega campaign is launched to propagate the importance of the National Immunisation Day, which happens to be 1st Feb 2009. Every child needs to be immunised irrespective of the previous dose.
NO CHILD IS SAFE TILL EVERY CHILD IS SAFE
Once the Polio is eradicated from India, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria, the savings of polio eradication are potentially as high as US$1.5 billion per year could be used to address other public health priorities. The savings in human suffering will be immeasurable.
“ROTARY INTERNATIONAL – District 3230", is organising an event in support of "POLIO PLUS", on Friday the 2nd Jan 2009 at the Kamaraj Arangam.
It will be a grand bonanza of music, under the title, "AAYIRAM NILAVE VAA…", an exclusive super hits of the all time great singer Padmashri Dr.S.P.Balasubrahmanyam, by celebrity film singers, supported by "SRUTHI LAYA" orchestra.
Rotary International, Dist 3230, comprising of 104 clubs from 5 revenue districts, will be conferring the prestigious title, "Rotary Life Time Achievement Award" on Dr.S.P.B., for his excellent service to the Indian Cinema through music, on that occasion.
Mellisai Mannar Sri.M.S.Viswanathan and Music Director Vidyasagar will be gracing the occasion to do the honours along with the Rotary District Governor, Rtn.A.Subramanyam.
The event is completely dedicated for the cause of POLIO in its efforts of Rotary International to eradicate POLIO completely from the world.
