Idol wing of Tamil Nadu police recommends stepping up of protection [Wednesday, October 28, 2009]
The Idol Wing CID police of Tamil Nadu called for the necessity of protecting the antiques of the seven 'sapyhavidangal' and twenty seven 'upavidangal' tenmples of Tamil Nadu. The Additional Direcyor General of Police of the Economics Offences Wing said that there was an urgent need to step up potection. “We have insisted on adequate security arrangements at all the ‘sapthavidangal’ and ‘upavidangal’ temples. It has been suggested the security arrangements for the ‘Maragatha Lingam’ idol at Thirunallar temple (located in the Union Territory of Puducherry) be taken as a model,” said he. The gang of theives who stole the ‘Maragatha Lingam’ of the Maruntheeswarar Temple in Thiruthuraipoondi had disclosed to the police that they entered through the rear entry of the temple. It was due to the increasing frequency of such thefts that led to the economic crimes wing to come up with such a proposal.
