Swaminathan opposes food grain imports [Tuesday, September 29, 2009]
Agricultural Scientist M S Swaminathan came down heavily against the government's decision to import food grains to compensate for the shortage faced due to low monsoons. Swaminathan complained about the inadequacy of measures to ensure proper storage of food grains to compensate for the shortage. ``The importers lobby would always be there to make profit out of poverty. But, the Government needs to take adequate steps to improve the infrastructure for storing foodgrains. We should not allow monkeys and rats to eat away our produce’’, said Mr Swaminathan.
