Queen Elizabeth hands over the baton, common wealth games count down begin [Thursday, October 29, 2009]
The count down for the Common Wealth 2010 games started today with the traditional Queen's baton relay in which the queen of England hands over the baton to the head of the hosting country. Indian President Prathibha Patil received the baton from the queen which was engraved with a message from the queen in a 18 carat gold leaf. The President passed on the baton to the Indian sports minister M S Gill and then it reached the hands of Abhinav Bhindra, the only Indian Olympics gold medallist. The baton passed through the hands of legendary Indian cricketer Kapil Dev, the most successful female tennis player Sania Mirza, flying Sikh Milkha Singh, Olympic bronze medal winners — boxer Vijender Singh and wrestler Sushil Kumar — and England’s first Sikh cricketer, Monty Panesar, among other Indian sports personalities.
