Hazare ends fast, government revokes Lok Pal Bill  [Saturday, April 9, 2011]

Anna Hazare's fight against corruption won great support from the masses and the youth and has turned out to be one of the most successful people's movement in post-independence India. The government of India vouched that they will introduce the Lokpal Bill during the monsoon session of the parliament and that corruption cases will be handled by fast track courts for speedy disposal.

Though the government was acting irresolute about the bill, the fast by Anna Hazare and the consequent public support from people from all walks of life in no time forced the government to come up with a clear cut decision on the bill. Sri Hazare ended the fast after the government issued a gazette notification constituting a 10-member Joint Committee of ministers and civil society activists, including him, to draft an effective Lok Pal Bill. This put an end to the 98 hour hunger strike launched by Anna and supported by thousands in Jantar Mantar in Delhi.
