Five kollywood flicks were swept under the carpet by the selection committee during the shortlisting of India's official entry for the year's academy awards. Out of the 27 films, five were kollywood flicks. Angadi Theru, Madarasapattinam, Vinnaithandi Varuvaya, Raavanan and Singam were the flicks that entered the first round from kollywood. Ultimately, it was Amir Khan's 'Peepli Live' that was chosen by the selection commitee. "the film is a reflection of India's culture and ethos, even as it highlights the burning problem — farmer suicides.”, the selection commitee chairman Sethumadhavan K S was quoted as saying. Peepli Live is directed by Anusha Rizvi and is based on the heart rending story of farmer suicides in India with a good comical touch. The selection committee expressed high hopes for a good response to Peepli Live at the Academy Awards night this year.
