A second hope for India for Oscars.  [Saturday, January 24, 2009]
   
 

                  India has yet another hope for getting the first Oscar. Smile Pinki, a 39 - minute long film has been nominated in the Best Documentary Short Subject category and it has interesting connections to India. Guitarist R Prasanna, who grew up in Chennai has scored the music for this film which was directed by Megan Mylan. The story is about the journey of two children Pinki and Ghutaru from an Indian Village. The children have a cleft lip and a surgery that can possibly cure them looks unlikely until they meet social worker Pankaj, who are collecting patients for a hospital that provides free surgery. In the eighties, Chennai knew Mr Prasanna as a young lad, who could play Carnatic music on the guitar with unbelievable ease. Mr Prasanna, an alumunus of the Indian Institute of Technology - Madras, has performed at its culture fest both as a student and later as a sought - after artiste.
