Textile Exporters expresses varied response to budget [Wednesday, July 8, 2009]
The textile export community had expressed a series of response to the recently presented Union Budget. While some said that the budget provided a relief to the poor state of the textile industry, others where of the opinion that the budget had belied their expectations. A section of the industry welcomed the Finance Minister's moves to remove fringe benefit tax and the extension of the Textile Upgradation Fund Scheme. The other group held that “The Finance Minister’s proposals on withdrawing the fringe benefit tax, extending the two per cent interest subvention on pre-shipment credit to March 2010 and exemption from service tax on transportation for exports are welcome moves. Similarly, the reduction in excise duty on waste cotton is a good move but what we would like to have is total abolition as it is a major raw material for home textiles and furnishings,”
